RealtimeBoard project to represent Russia at the Creative Business Cup International Final

An online whiteboard project from Perm is to represent Russia at the International Final of the Creative Business Cup, a competition for creative entrepreneurs, which is to take place in Copenhagen from 18 to 20 November 2013

On 14 September, the Creative Entrepreneurship Centre hosted the Russian Final of the national selection competition for the Creative Business Cup. For the first time in the competition’s three-year history, creative entrepreneurs from Russia were given the chance to talk about themselves and their business or project within the framework of a world-class event. The Creative Industries Agency acted as the competition’s first and only operator in Russia.

Competitions like these allow participants to establish partnerships with representatives of creative businesses in other countries and tap into a new target group on the international market.

In order to find themselves among the frontrunners, the contestant had to send their project applications to the Creative Industries Agency before 25 July 2013. Criteria for assessing the business concepts included: originality, creativity and market potential. Applications to take part were sent in by contestants from various regions of Russia. The Final was then made up of the five strongest creative entrepreneurs:

1. Taisia Kaigorodova, DDshop, Moscow

2. Anna Tihomirova, Book Bus for children, Moscow

3. Anastasia Turchina, music project Seminotka, Moscow

4. Andrey Khusid, RealtimeBoard.com, Perm

The creative entrepreneurs not only defended their projects at the Russian Final held in Moscow, they also received valuable advice from leading experts in the field of creative industries. A talk by brand consultant and strategy lecturer at the Wordshop Academy of Communication, Oleg Karasev, entitled “Reason and Feeling in Marketing: Regional and Emotional Branding” lead contestants to look at their projects in a completely new light. In a masterclass entitled “The Correct Presentation of Your Ideas”, meanwhile, creative director and founder of FRIENDS AGENCY & BORODA PROJECT, Arina Avdeeva, not only prepared the team for their final presentation, she also promised to help the winner with the presentation video required for their trip to Copenhagen. That is where the next stage of the competition is to take place – the International Final – which will bring together creative entrepreneurs from all over the world.

The fate of Russia’s contestants was decided by members of the Final’s distinguished jury: ElenaZelentsova (the Deputy Head of Department of Culture Moscow), Elena Melvil (Director, ZIL Cultural Centre), Elizaveta Fokina (Executive Director, Association of Cultural Managers), Tatyana Dubovskaya (Director, Creative Entrepreneurship Centre), Elena Privalova (Curator of partnership projects, Business Incubator of Higher School of Economics), Nikolay Matushevsky (Owner, Creative cluster Flacon).

Andrey Khusid from Perm now has the chance to obtain the title of the world’s best creative entrepreneur. His project RealtimeBoard.com – an online whiteboard for team collaboration – was awarded first place at the Russian Final of the national selection competition of the Creative Business Cup. “The idea essentially came about because of my own needs”, says the founder of creative agency Vitamin Group, Andrey Khusid. “We had a number of design projects that we needed to discuss amongst ourselves and with clients in a convenient way. There was no suitable online tool on the market at that time (2011), so we decided to create our own product. I discussed the idea with colleagues, assembled a group of programmers from Vitamin Group’s design department and we started making a prototype. The project was made available to the public in 2012 and Realtimeboard is now used by tens of thousands of people around the world. One of our main objectives at present is to strengthen our position on the global market”.

From 18-20 November 2013, representatives from 40 participating countries (Russia, Italy, the USA, Greece, Germany, Great Britain, Brazil, Croatia, Turkey and others) will gather together in Copenhagen (Denmark) as part of the International Final of the Creative Business Cup, organised to take place during Global Entrepreneurship Week. To receive the top prize, our team will have to get through an assessment by major players in the creative industries, including Torsten Kolind, Co-founder & CTO, YouNoodle, Inc, USA, an electronic network where entrepreneurs can interact with like-minded people around the world. An international jury will help to assess the international importance of the business ideas. ThiswillbemadeupofZhongming Wang, Professor and Director, Global Entrepreneurship Research Center (China), Helga Valfells, Managing director, NSA Venture Fund,  (Iceland), and others. Our Russian winner still has the battle to win top prize ahead of him, but one thing can already be said for sure – the project’s team will be able to obtain a unique experience, professional contacts and an international vision of their creative business. This will be helped along by the rich and diverse programme of the Creative Business Cup’s International Final.

According to the expert community, the promotion of Russian companies in the sphere of creative industries internationally will help to change the perception and unlock the potential of creative entrepreneurs within Russia.
