On 9 August 2014, the Flacon Design Factory hosted the Russian Final of the national selection competition for the Creative Business Cup. Thanks to the Creative Industries Agency, this is the second year that the competition has been held in Russia, and it is the second year that a representative from Russia will fight for the title of the world’s best creative entrepreneur.

The Creative Business Cup is more than just a competition for creative start-ups; it is an international network of professional contacts within the creative industries and entrepreneurship, and a tool for the support and development of new business models. Competitions like these allow participants from around the world to establish partnerships with representatives of creative industries in other countries and tap into a new target group on the international market.

Entrepreneurs in the fields of advertising, architecture, performing arts, fashion, cinema, multimedia, applied arts, literature and publishing from 11 regions around the country took part in the all-Russian qualifying round of the competition.

The assessment criteria included: originality, creativity and market potential. The Final was made up of the country’s five strongest creative entrepreneurs:

  • Anastasia Shcherbakova (‘Shusha’ project, Moscow)
  • Ilya Afanasyev (‘Robot Pashka’ project, Samara)
  • Lada Shapovalova (‘Kolobook’ publishing project, Moscow)
  • Anna Gvozdareva (AnG Art Laboratory, St. Petersburg)
  • Valeriy Mifodovskiy (Digital music publishing platform ‘3PLET’, Moscow)

At the Russian Final held in Moscow, creative entrepreneurs not only had to defend their projects, they also received valuable advice from leading experts in the field of creative industries. The director and founder of the branding and communications agency FRIENDS AGENCY & BORODA PROJECT, Arina Avdeeva, gave a masterclass entitled “The Presentation of Ideas. What’s more important: form or content?”, and prepared the teams for their final presentations at the International Final, which will bring together creative entrepreneurs from all over the world. The mood for the Final was set by music from the IN’R’VOICE (Kissthesound.com Records) UK-RU / DJ Set project.

The fate of Russia’s contestants was decided by members of the Final’s distinguished jury:

  • Dmitry Knyazev – Deputy Head, Moscow’s Department of Science, Industrial Policy and Entrepreneurship
  • Elena Melvil – Director, ZIL Cultural Centre
  • Nikolay Matushevsky – Owner, Flacon Design Factory
  • Dmitry Belikov – Director, Moscow Agency for the Development of Territories through Culture
  • Daria Bolshakova – Development Director, Gladway Foundation for the development of media projects and social programmes
  • Alena Popova – Co-founder, StartUp Women – a virtual incubator and community for female entrepreneurs

First place in the Russian Final of the Creative Business Cup’s national selection competition was awarded to Valeriy Mifodovskiy for his musical publishing platform 3PLET. The publishing platform gives musicians and their listeners the opportunity to gather music, images and text in one place. This album can then be accessed by users around the world through major music platforms and online magazines.

The next step for Valeriy and his team is to take part in the International Final of the Creative Business Cup, which is to take place from 17-19 November in Copenhagen (Denmark) as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week. The International Final will bring together representatives from 40 participating countries (including Russia, Italy, the US, Greece, Germany, Great Britain, Brazil, Croatia, Turkey and others). To receive the top prize, our team will have to get through an assessment by major players in the business sphere, including Rebeca Hwang, Co-founder of the venture fund Rivet Ventures and Co-founder of the start-up YouNoodle, Stanford University, America; Simone Brummelhuis, Founder and CEO of The Next Entrepreneur, the Netherlands; and Edward Jung, Founder of Intellectual Ventures, America.

Our Russian winners still have the battle to win top prize ahead of them, but one thing can already be said for sure – the project’s team will be able to obtain a unique experience, professional contacts and an international vision of their creative business. This will be helped along by the rich and diverse programme of the Creative Business Cup’s International Final.

The International Final will include seminars, conferences, one-on-one sessions (individual presentation and consultation sessions), investor matchmaking, and the Market Place. The event will be attended by national hosts, national winners, creative entrepreneurs, competition partners, representatives of entrepreneurial organisations and government institutions, investors, and experts within the field of creative industries.

This year, every Russian finalist will also get the unique opportunity to meet international investors and partners, establish new professional contacts, and have their businesses evaluated by international experts thanks to the online training platform CBC Connect.
